Packing for Umrah is different from packing for an ordinary trip. Alongside everyday travel items, you need specific things for the state of Ihram, for long hours of walking and standing, and for a climate that can shift from extreme heat to cool, air-conditioned interiors within minutes. This checklist is organised by category so you can pack methodically rather than trying to remember everything at once.
Ihram & Clothing
For Men
- 2–3 sets of Ihram sheets (unstitched, so pack a few in case one gets damaged or dirty)
- An Ihram belt or money pouch that does not require stitching or pinning
- Spare safety pins are generally avoided, since Ihram garments are meant to remain unstitched — use a proper Ihram belt instead
- Comfortable sandals that are easy to slip on and off, since footwear must be removed before entering the mosque
For Women
- Loose, modest, comfortable clothing that covers the body appropriately — no specific colour is required, though many pilgrims choose white or light colours
- A comfortable hijab or abaya suited to warm weather
- Flat, comfortable shoes for extended walking
For Everyone
- Regular clothing for time outside the state of Ihram (breathable, modest fabrics work best in Saudi Arabia's climate)
- A light jacket or shawl, as mosque interiors are often heavily air-conditioned
- Extra undergarments and socks
Toiletries
- Unscented soap and shampoo (perfumed products are restricted while in Ihram)
- Toothbrush, unscented toothpaste, and a miswak if you prefer
- Nail clippers (used before entering Ihram, since cutting nails is restricted during it)
- Small towel, and a travel-size prayer mat if you don't wish to rely on mosque-provided ones
- Wet wipes and tissues — always useful in crowded areas
Health & Medication
- Any prescription medication in its original packaging, along with your doctor's prescription
- Basic over-the-counter items: paracetamol, antacids, oral rehydration salts, and blister plasters for feet
- Hand sanitiser and a small first-aid kit
- Sunscreen, as UV exposure during Tawaf and outdoor walking can be intense
Documents to Carry (Not Check In)
Keep these in your hand luggage, never in checked baggage:
- Passport and printed Umrah visa
- Meningitis vaccination certificate
- Flight and hotel booking confirmations
- Emergency contact card

Electronics
- Mobile phone with a local or international SIM/eSIM arranged in advance
- Universal travel adapter (Saudi Arabia commonly uses Type G sockets)
- Power bank, as long days at the Haramain can drain your phone battery quickly
- Headphones, useful for the flight and for listening to Quran recitation or lectures
Money & Essentials
- A mix of cash (Saudi Riyals) and a debit/credit card that works internationally
- A small cross-body bag or pouch for carrying essentials during Tawaf and Sa'i, since your hands need to remain free
- A reusable water bottle — useful for carrying Zamzam water within the mosque premises
- Small locks for your luggage
What to Leave at Home
- Excessive jewellery or valuables — there is little practical need for them and they add risk
- Heavily scented perfumes or colognes, particularly for the duration you are in Ihram
- Overly bulky luggage — most package tours involve moving between hotels and cities, so lighter luggage is easier to manage
